    All classes spend one semester of English each year in basic grammar, standard usage, and mechanics; and one semester studying literature. Weekly work includes vocabulary, spelling, themes, and essays. Memorization of poetry is also required at various times throughout the year. Outside reading for book reports is assigned each quarter. 

Grade 9
1 Unit 
    The literature study includes the elements of literature of both American and world writings. The short story, essay, biography, novel, play and poem are explored. Discussions are held for the emphasis of spiritual values and growth.

Grade 10 
1 Unit
    A continuation and further study of the types of literary material introduced in Grade 9. Also included is an in-depth study of the term paper. Special emphasis is given to research, mechanics, form, etc.

Grade 11
1 Unit
   Students study grammar with an emphasis on diagramming complex sentences. Writing assignments focus on writing cohesive paragraphs and essays, culminating in a research paper. The course includes an in-depth look at Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. A survey of American literature from the 1600’s to the present ends with a unit on film.

Grade 12 
1 Unit
    English literature. The student follows the trends found in English literature beginning with the Anglo-Saxon period and Beowulf to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Rationalists, the Romantics, the Victorians, and then to modern day. Both the philosophy and the literature are discussed to see the conflicts between man's and God's ideas.

Developmental Study Skills
1 Unit
    This orientation course acquaints the freshman student with the basics for a successful high school education, covering such topics as proper study habits, organizing of time, taking notes, theme writing, speaking, word derivation, spelling and reading. Required of all freshman students.
